Abstract

Researchers from Stellenbosch University have published a report on testosterone congeners, specifically focusing on the contribution of 11-oxy androgens to androgen excess and deficiency disorders. The study analyzed the circulating adrenal and gonadal steroid hormones in 70 healthy young men using advanced chromatography and mass spectrometry techniques. The results showed that testosterone was the most prominent androgen detected in all participants, while dihydrotestosterone was only detected in 25% of them. The presence of 11-oxy androgens was observed in most participants, significantly contributing to the androgen pool. The study suggests that analyzing both classical and 11-oxy androgens, along with dehydroepiandrosterone and 16-hydroxyprogesterone, may improve diagnostic accuracy in androgen excess or deficiency.
