Abstract

A new report discusses research findings on arachnoid cysts, which are rare entities that mainly occur in the cervical and thoracic spine. The majority of these cysts are typically treated through posterior approaches with laminectomy or laminotomy. However, researchers at Stellenbosch University in South Africa have presented an alternative therapeutic approach called trans-disc and trans-vertebral aspiration. They have successfully treated anterior cervical arachnoid cysts through an anterior approach, with three out of four procedures resulting in complete clinical resolution at a 6-month follow-up. The researchers believe that this approach is a safe alternative to posterior intradural approaches and recommend MRI scanning at 6 months or earlier if clinical improvement is not demonstrated.
