Abstract

A recent report from the University of Texas Dallas discusses the opportunistic pathogen Enterococcus faecium, which colonizes humans and animals, resists antibiotic treatment, and persists in clinical environments. The widespread use of antibiotics has led to the emergence of vancomycin-resistant E. faecium, causing hospital-acquired infections. The report explores the evolutionary history, environmental adaptation, colonization and dissemination mechanisms of E. faecium and vancomycin-resistant E. faecium. The findings provide insights for developing preventive and therapeutic approaches against vancomycin-resistant E. faecium and shed light on the emergence and endurance of antibiotic-resistant pathogens.
