Abstract

A recent study conducted by the Illinois Institute of Technology explores the impact of gut bacteria on the pharmacokinetics of two oral drugs, tacrolimus and sulfasalazine. The researchers found that the presence of certain bacteria can influence the expression of intestinal drug transporters and enzymes, leading to variations in drug bioavailability. Specifically, the study revealed that bacterial modulation reduces the peak blood concentration of tacrolimus but increases the peak plasma concentration of sulfasalazine. These findings suggest that considering the influence of gut bacteria on drug metabolism could improve pharmacokinetic models and address the challenge of variable oral drug bioavailability.
