Abstract

A recent study from the University Sains Malaysia highlights an unusual case of spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak presenting as middle ear effusion (MEE) caused by arachnoid granulations. The study describes the case of a 59-year-old obese female who presented with symptoms of right ear fullness, reduced hearing, and persistent postnasal drip. After various assessments and imaging, the patient underwent surgery and experienced a full recovery. The study emphasizes the importance of considering CSF effusion as a potential diagnosis for adults with persistent unilateral MEE, even in the absence of head trauma or other risk factors.
