Abstract

A case report from the University of Utah discusses the incidental detection of multiple endocrine neoplasia and medullary thyroid carcinoma in a man with a history of obesity and hypothyroidism. The patient planned to start taking a Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist for weight loss, but prior to starting the drug, a calcitonin level was checked and found to be elevated. Further testing revealed medullary thyroid carcinoma and a genetic mutation confirming the diagnosis of multiple endocrine neoplasia 2 syndrome. The patient's relatives also underwent genetic testing. This case highlights the importance of evaluating patients for underlying conditions before starting certain medications.
