Abstract

Researchers at Lanzhou University in China have developed a potential vaccine for foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV). The vaccine, administered nasally, was found to induce both local and systemic immune responses in mice and provided an 80% protection rate against a highly virulent strain of FMDV in guinea pigs. The researchers used nanotechnology to deliver the vaccine, attaching the vaccine to nanospheres that targeted antigen-presenting cells. This study suggests that the nasal vaccine could be an effective and cross-protective option for preventing FMDV infection. [Extracted from the article]
