Abstract

This article explores the importance of motivation in language learning, specifically in school-aged learners. It discusses the challenges faced by educators in motivating language learners and the theoretical developments in the field. The article emphasizes the need for more research on school-aged learners' motivation and the role of teachers in fostering motivation. It also introduces a special issue that includes studies on gamification, task engagement, and instructional settings in relation to motivation. The text further discusses various studies on motivation and engagement in language learning, including the importance of considering students' full linguistic repertoires, the use of non-digital gamification techniques, and the characteristics of tasks that maximize engagement. It also explores the concept of Directed Motivational Currents (DMCs) and how they can lead to profound change in language learning. Finally, a study examines the creation of a group DMC through project work in a university language classroom. These studies contribute to our understanding of motivation and engagement in language learning and highlight the need for further research in this area. [Extracted from the article]
