Abstract

Researchers from Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia have discovered new Schiff bases of the disalicylic acid scaffold that act as DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV inhibitors with antibacterial properties. These compounds showed significant antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, with some compounds exhibiting greater efficacy than the standard antibiotic ciprofloxacin. The most potent compounds were also found to inhibit E. coli DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV more effectively than the reference novobiocin. Docking studies suggest that one compound, 5h, has the potential to be an effective dual inhibitor against both enzymes. [Extracted from the article]
