Abstract

A study conducted by the University of Rome Tor Vergata explores the potential impact of endodontic infections caused by Fusobacterium nucleatum or Porphyromonas gingivalis on oral carcinogenesis. The researchers found that these bacteria, which are associated with periodontitis, are present in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) tissues and oral premalignant lesions. The study suggests that infection by these bacteria triggers the production of inflammatory cytokines and growth factors, affecting the survival, proliferation, invasion, and differentiation of OSCC cells. While most of the literature does not support the idea that bacteria-induced endodontic inflammatory diseases impact oral carcinogenesis, the researchers recommend further investigations on this topic.
