Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at Shanxi Agricultural University in China has investigated the impact of O- and N-linked glycans on the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV) and its interaction with host cells. The study found that while inhibiting the synthesis of O- and N-linked glycans on cell surfaces did not significantly affect virus infection, PEDV strains lacking N-linked glycans showed a notable 40% reduction in infectivity. Inhibiting N-linked glycan synthesis with a glycosidase I inhibitor also decreased virus entry into cells. In vivo experiments infecting piglets with N-glycan-deficient strains resulted in milder symptoms and reduced virus excretion. These findings suggest that N-glycosylation inhibitors could be potential therapeutic interventions against PEDV. However, further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms of N-linked glycans in PEDV infection. [Extracted from the article]
