Abstract

A report from the University of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia explores the capacity of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to achieve Sustainable Human Resource Management (S-HRM) and organizational resilience outcomes during crisis contexts, using the 2019/2020 Victorian bushfires and COVID-19 as case studies. The study found that factors such as business type, location, workforce management, owner-managers' skill sets and networks, prior experience of crises, individual wellbeing, government crisis management processes, and housing shortages influenced SMEs' sustainability and resilience outcomes. The research discusses how SMEs in the tourism and hospitality sector can nurture social outcomes and organizational resilience in line with the UN's Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 8). The study is timely given the workplace disruptions caused by COVID-19 and the likelihood of future shocks. [Extracted from the article]
