Abstract

A study conducted by the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai, China, explores the potential of liver cell therapy as an alternative to liver transplantation for patients with liver failure and hereditary liver diseases. The scarcity of human hepatocytes has limited the clinical implementation of this therapy. The study reviews strategies to generate functional human hepatocytes and discusses their potential applications in hepatocyte transplantation and bioartificial liver transplantation. The researchers also highlight new delivery methods to improve hepatocyte engraftment and discuss potential future directions. [Extracted from the article]
