Abstract

Target recently released a collection of products inspired by Gee's Bend quilts, made by descendants of slaves in rural Alabama. The collection sold out quickly, indicating a growing interest in conscious consumption and homemade items. However, the quilters themselves were only paid a flat rate for their contributions, rather than receiving a proportionate payment based on Target's sales. This raises concerns about the representation and meaningful change for marginalized communities when their cultural traditions are co-opted by corporate America. The article also mentions the lack of engagement between Target and the quilters, as well as the economic challenges faced by the Gee's Bend community. [Extracted from the article]
