Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of the Pacific has found that Boswellia serrata extract, derived from frankincense produced by Boswellia trees, has antimicrobial effects on Porphyromonas gingivalis, a bacterium associated with periodontitis. The study demonstrated that the extract impaired the growth and biofilm formation of P. gingivalis, as well as decreased its intracellular infection in human gingival epithelial cells. The researchers suggest that B. serrata has the potential to prevent and/or treat periodontal diseases, and future studies will focus on identifying the specific components responsible for these effects.
