Abstract
- The author discusses the start, growth and popularity of "Coronation Street," the signature soap of British television network ITV. The author created the soap for ITV after working as a writer for other ITV shows. It was about theater and North England. Its initial title was "Florizel Street." It was later changed to "Coronation Street." The network executives worried about losing advertising. The author then recast the part of Ena Sharples and agreed on Violet Carson as the actress to play the role of a woman of 70 with the vitality of a girl of 17. "Coronation Street" is heading for its 45th year in 2005.
