Abstract

Sara Curruchich is a Guatemalan singer-songwriter who is determined to represent women and carry the knowledge of her Indigenous heritage through her music. She is known for singing contemporary songs in the Mayan Kaqchikel language, which is a revolutionary act. Curruchich's music is influenced by her childhood experiences, including gaining courage through singing and being inspired by the rhythms of the marimba. She uses her music to combat discrimination and promote dignity and respect for Indigenous women worldwide. Curruchich performs in both intimate and band settings, aiming to reaffirm the emotional connection that music creates and amplify the participation of women in the music industry. She has faced controversy in her homeland for her contemporary persona and political expression. Curruchich is still in the process of recovering her cultural legacy and has participated in collective endeavors, such as the International Indigenous Music Summit, to heal and learn from other Indigenous musicians. Her music challenges colonist frameworks and reflects a different way of being, rooted in collective memory and rebellion against erasure. [Extracted from the article]
