Abstract

A study conducted by researchers from Shandong University in Jinan, China, explores the use of modified polyurea coated helmets to mitigate the effects of shock waves on the brain. The study focuses on the protection against traumatic brain injury caused by explosive blasts, which is a leading cause of death in military conflicts. The researchers designed a new type of shock wave protection helmet by adding SiO2 nanoparticles to the polyurea material. The experiments showed that the addition of SiO2 nanoparticles improved the shock mitigation properties of the helmet, reducing peak overpressure and acceleration of the shock wave. The study concludes that the new material provides effective protection against shock waves. [Extracted from the article]
