Abstract
- A recent report from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa, highlights the urgent need for novel antimicrobial agents to combat drug-resistant strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The study focuses on the potential of phenolic compounds, specifically quercetin, to target the enzyme glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) in N. gonorrhoeae. The researchers found that quercetin demonstrated significant binding affinity to N. gonorrhoeae-derived GAPDH and identified potential binding sites crucial for antimicrobial action. This research provides valuable insights into the development of quercetin-based therapeutics to address the global health challenge posed by drug-resistant N. gonorrhoeae.
