Abstract

Kelp forests are a vital part of the marine environment along BC's near-shore coastline, providing forage and protection for marine fish and other inhabitants. However, some kelp forests are declining due to threats such as marine heat waves, El Nino events, warming patterns, and predatory foraging. Research from the University of Victoria suggests that kelp forests in the Strait of Juan de Fuca are more resilient to warming ocean temperatures compared to those in the Strait of Georgia. The impact of increasing summer temperatures on kelp forests could have negative effects on marine diversity. Restoration efforts should consider local environmental conditions for maximum success.
