Abstract
- A recent study conducted by researchers at Harvard Medical School has found that a significant number of individuals with type 1 diabetes show signs of cerebrovascular disease in brain MRI scans. These signs are associated with advanced stages of diabetic retinal disease, but not with mild or moderate retinopathy. The study examined the relationship between retinal vessel parameters and cerebrovascular changes in individuals with type 1 diabetes. The researchers concluded that regardless of the severity of diabetic retinopathy, the ratio of retinal artery to vein is associated with the presence of cerebral microbleeds in type 1 diabetes patients.
