A study conducted by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine has found a link between prurigo nodularis (PN), a chronic inflammatory skin disease, and liver disease. The study revealed that PN patients had a higher risk of developing various liver conditions compared to healthy controls. Further analysis showed dysregulation of genes related to hepatic failure in PN patients. A subsequent genome-wide association study identified shared genetic variations between PN and liver disease.
