Abstract

A study conducted at Zhejiang University in China explored the role of CD24(hi)CD27(+) regulatory B cells (Bregs) in promoting drug resistance in breast cancer cells within metastatic lymph nodes (mLNs). The researchers collected mLNs samples from breast cancer patients who had received neoadjuvant therapy and analyzed the spatial features of CD24(hi)CD27(+) Bregs. They found a close spatial correlation between activated Bregs and residual tumor cells within mLNs. Mechanistically, Bregs enhanced the acquisition of multidrug resistance and stem-like features in breast cancer cells by secreting IL6 and TNF alpha. The study suggests that targeting Bregs and blocking their interactions with breast cancer cells could improve tumor regression in mLNs and provide a novel strategy for chemoimmunotherapy combination in breast cancer patients with mLNs.
