Abstract
- The article discusses the Liberty Ship Conversion and Engine Improvement Program, which aimed to improve the performance of ships in the United States Ready Reserve Fleet during the Korean War. Four Liberty ships were selected for conversion, with modifications made to their propulsion systems, cargo-handling gear, and hulls. The program resulted in successful conversions, with one ship achieving a top speed of 17.5 knots during sea trials. However, the government decided not to convert any more Liberty ships due to the availability of newer, more efficient vessels. [Extracted from the article]
