Abstract

A recent report discusses research conducted at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai on opioids. The study aimed to compare patterns in opioid usage and prescriptions between patients undergoing cervical laminectomy with instrumented fusion (LF) versus cervical laminoplasty with reconstruction (LP). The findings revealed that patients who underwent LF had a higher rate of 6-month opioid use compared to those who underwent LP in a single-surgeon cohort. However, in a national database cohort, there was no significant difference in opioid use between the two procedures. The research suggests that surgeons should consider the distinct pain requirements associated with different procedures to prevent overuse of narcotics. [Extracted from the article]
