Abstract
- A study conducted at Children's Mercy Hospitals in Kansas City, Missouri, explored the use of botulinum toxin therapy as a treatment for refractory vulvodynia in adolescents. Vulvodynia is a condition characterized by vulvar discomfort without an identifiable cause. The study found that transvaginal botulinum toxin injections into the pelvic floor were effective in treating vulvodynia in select adolescent patients who had not responded well to other interventions. However, further research is needed to determine the optimal dosing, frequency, and sites of botulinum toxin injections for pediatric and adolescent patients with vulvodynia. This research was supported by the NIH Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development. [Extracted from the article]
