Abstract

This article discusses the prevalence and significance of osteochondral fragmentation (OCF) in the palmar/plantar proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint of yearling Thoroughbred horses. The study highlights the importance of comprehensive lameness examinations, including diagnostic analgesia, radiography, and ultrasonography, in assessing the risk and impact of OCF on future athletic performance. The article suggests that ultrasound examination of associated soft tissues, in addition to radiography, may be necessary to accurately evaluate the significance of OCF. The authors also emphasize the need for further research to better understand the management and treatment options for horses with OCF in the PIP joint. [Extracted from the article]
