Abstract

This article presents information on direct satellite television broadcasting. Direct-to-home (DTH) satellite television broadcasting has no strict technical or legal definition. Systems originally intended for DTH applications have operated at downlink frequencies above 11 GHz and with antennas of 1 m or less. Most systems have been supported primarily from subscription and pay-per-view revenues rather than advertising revenues. Although DTH satellite television was a dream of satellite engineers since the early 1960s, little progress was made until the early 1980s.
