Abstract

A study conducted by Fujian Medical University in China examined the impact of sarcopenia, or muscle loss, on the outcomes of older patients with locally advanced gastric cancer (LAGC) who underwent surgery. The study found that sarcopenia was associated with an increased risk of postoperative complications and lower overall survival and recurrence-free survival rates. The recurrence rate and incidence of distant metastases were also higher in the sarcopenia group. The researchers concluded that assessing the nutritional status of older LAGC patients before surgery and providing thorough postoperative follow-up are important for improving outcomes.
