Abstract

A preprint abstract from biorxiv.org discusses the effectiveness of boric acid as a treatment for vulvovaginal candidiasis, commonly known as a "vaginal yeast infection." The study examined the ability of Candida albicans, the most common cause of these infections, to develop resistance or tolerance to boric acid. The researchers found that while some populations of C. albicans were able to grow in higher levels of boric acid, there were no significant increases in resistance or tolerance. These findings suggest that there may be evolutionary constraints limiting the emergence of boric acid resistance and tolerance, which could explain why it remains an effective treatment for recurrent yeast infections.
