Abstract

Researchers from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China have developed a triggerable prodrug nanocoating that enables the on-demand activation of microbial and small-molecular therapeutics for combination treatment. The nanocoating, made from a reactive oxygen species-responsive aromatic thioacetal linker, forms on the surface of living bacteria and protects them from in vivo insults. When the nanocoating reaches the lesion site, the thioacetal linker is cleaved, releasing the conjugated drug and a therapeutic cinnamaldehyde. The nanocoating also dissociates, leading to the synchronous release of the living bacteria. This approach shows promise for advanced therapy of diseases. [Extracted from the article]
