Abstract

This article focuses on the manual guidance for the treatment of the self-injurious behavior. The procedure used for treating self-injurious behavior was a manual hand and arm guidance procedure adapted from the Functional Movement Training used to treat self-stimulatory behavior. As applied here, the manual guidance consisted essentially of a series of manually guided hand and arm movements on the part of the subject that were made contingent upon each attempt at self-injurious behavior. During the manual guidance the experimenter stood close to and behind the subject in order to monitor the subject's actions visually.
