Abstract
- The article examines the Basal metabolic rate (BMR) in healthy Down's syndrome adults. Basal metabolism is different in the sexes when expressed in terms of surface area. Therefore, BMR was examined in each sex separately, in addition to the sexes combined. When metabolic values were normalized to surface area or lean body mass, no difference in BMR was noted between the Down's syndrome and control groups for either sex. Further, normalization to percent predicted basal metabolism also should have corrected for any sex differences.
