Abstract
- Researchers from Nanjing University have published a study on acute ischemia, a condition that affects patient prognosis after stroke. The researchers used single-cell RNA-sequencing and spatial transcriptomics to identify microglial subclusters in the brains of mice with middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). They found two distinct subclusters, ischemic core-associated microglia (ICAM) and ischemic penumbra-associated microglia (IPAM), which have different spatial distributions and functional characteristics. ICAM is associated with neuroinflammation and brain injury, while IPAM exhibits neuroprotective features. The findings suggest that targeting specific microglial subclusters could be a potential therapeutic strategy for ischemic stroke. [Extracted from the article]
