Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at the Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Hangzhou, China, explored the utilization characteristics and mechanism of action of the probiotics Bifidobacterium longum and Pediococcus pentosaceus when combined. The study used in vitro simulation technology to set up individual and mixed cultures of the two probiotics with different types of prebiotics. The results showed that the combination of B. longum and P. pentosaceus could synergistically utilize fructo oligosaccharides (FOS) and produced significantly more acetic acid than B. longum alone. These findings provide insights into the potential benefits of probiotic combinations in alleviating infantile colic symptoms by influencing gut pH and regulating gut microbiota.
