Abstract

This paper identifies and analyzes the Confucian ideal of music and applies its principles to music from the American folk revival. Confucius believed that music, unlike ritual, should promote both unity between people and harmony within the individual. He argued that music ought to inspire peace and positive emotions. The Folk Revival promoted togetherness inside the United States. It is best represented by protest anthems emphasizing change and solidarity. Such anthems upheld the Confucian standard for pure music by celebrating economic, racial, and gender diversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
