Abstract

Appleby Blue is a new type of almshouse in Rotherhithe, London, designed for older people who want to lead an active life in the inner city. The building provides self-contained homes for 63 residents aged 65+ and includes communal facilities to create a flourishing and caring community. The design of Appleby Blue embraces the city and features a well-staffed resident support office, a community kitchen, a public room with communal dining tables and oversized armchairs, and a garden courtyard. The project prioritizes natural orientation, passive energy, and the agency of its inhabitants, with large sliding doors and windows and photovoltaics on the roofs. Appleby Blue is a social housing project that achieved a sense of luxury through collaboration and careful detailing. It aims to create a sense of community and improve the well-being of its residents through inclusivity and quality design. [Extracted from the article]
