Abstract

Pedro Sanchez was elected as Spain's prime minister with an absolute majority of 179 votes, his highest tally in three elections since 2019. However, his victory is controversial due to the amnesty deal he made with the center-right Catalan separatist party Junts. This deal grants amnesty to those accused of crimes related to the Catalan independence movement. While the amnesty has faced opposition from many Spaniards, Sanchez believes it will help deflate the independence movement in Catalonia. The amnesty law may face scrutiny from Spain's Constitutional Court, but Sanchez justifies it as a way to promote dialogue and forgiveness. Despite protests and calls for a military coup, Sanchez's victory solidifies his position as prime minister. [Extracted from the article]
