Abstract

A recent study conducted by Maastricht University Medical Center has found that certain immunomodulating chemotherapeutic drugs, including rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone, can pass through the placenta during pregnancy and potentially impact the development of the immune system in exposed infants. The study examined three infants exposed to these drugs during pregnancy and found that they experienced various immune system effects, such as B-cell lymphopenia, hypogammaglobinemia, neutropenia, and decreased response to immunization. The researchers recommend immune monitoring of exposed infants. Further information on this research can be found in the journal article published by Clinical Immunology Communications.
