Abstract
- A recent report by New York City Comptroller Brad Lander has found that the Citi Bike service, operated by Lyft, is increasingly unreliable, particularly in low-income neighborhoods and communities of color. The report highlights that neighborhoods on the outskirts of Citi Bike's coverage area experience more unusable stations, disproportionately affecting Black, Latino, and low-income residents. The analysis also revealed that Citi Bike users in the Bronx are 89% more likely to encounter disabled or broken bikes compared to users in other boroughs. The report criticizes the city's failure to enforce fines against Lyft for not meeting service requirements. Lyft has disputed some of the findings and has announced plans to double its fleet of electric Citi Bikes and improve charging infrastructure. The Department of Transportation (DOT) intends to review the report and work towards making the bikeshare program more equitable. [Extracted from the article]
