Abstract

Researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder have conducted a study on the structural mechanism of mitochondrial membrane remodeling by human Opa1. The study found that Opa1, a mechanochemical GTPase, influences the architecture of cristae and catalyzes the fusion of the mitochondrial inner membrane. Through a combination of cellular and structural analyses, the researchers discovered that Opa1 embeds itself into cardiolipin-containing membranes and promotes the helical assembly of a flexible Opa1 lattice on the membrane, driving mitochondrial fusion in cells. These findings provide insights into how Opa1 shapes mitochondrial morphology and how human disease mutations can compromise its functions. [Extracted from the article]
