Abstract

This article provides biographical information on author Gilbert Keith Chesterton. He was born on May 29, 1874. Chesterton began his study of art at Slade School and experienced a traumatic period of personal and religious problems in 1892. The earliest biography of Chesterton was that written by his friend and assistant editor at the New Witness the year Chesterton died: W. R. Titterton's G. K. Chesterton: A Portrait. In 1945 F. A. Lea's The Wild Knight of Battersea: G. K. Chesterton took a quite different tack, identifying Chesterton's two great limitations as his embracing the Roman Catholic Church and his failing to embrace pacifism.
