Abstract
- Water utilities face significant costs from the deterioration of their water distribution systems. For more than a decade, Canadian water utilities have been using an innovative installation technique for retrofitting cathodic protection anodes to existing water mains. In 2003, a similar sacrificial anode retrofit program was undertaken in a U.S. city to reduce its main breaks and extend the life of its system. The results of a 2003-2004 pilot program show that a 20-year life extension can be achieved at less than 10% of the replacement cost of the piping. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
