Abstract

An ecologically conscious company has a corporate culture that embraces some essential perceptions, ideas, values, and behaviors, such as state of the world, interconnectedness of problems, and shifts from objects to relationships, from parts to the whole, from domination to partnership, from structures to processes, from self-assertion to integration, and from growth to sustainability. The first step in redefining the company&x2019; s culture is a critical analysis of its corporate philosophy. Top managers need to ask themselves if they are really concerned about the state of the world, if they really understand the key concepts of ecology, if they themselves live in an ecologically conscious way, and to what extent the principles of systemic management are part of their corporate cultures. This philosophical analysis should lead to a reformulation of corporate goals and strategies in such a way that they include the ecological dimension as an integral part. Once the identification and analysis have been made, ecologically oriented corporate goals can be formulated. EcoManagement is the result of an Elmwood Institute project called Global File, which collects, analyzes, and distributes information about successful ecological practices in business and government.
