Abstract

Prior to the late 1960s, pediatric short bowel syndrome was a frequently fatal disease. Currently, pediatric interdisciplinary bowel rehabilitation centers report very high survival rates. The mortality trends, up-to-date definitions, incidence, causes, and clinical manifestations of short bowel syndrome are reviewed. Emphasis is placed upon the nutritional, medical, and surgical advances that have contributed to the dramatic improvement in outcomes for pediatric short bowel syndrome patients. Recent findings and remaining challenges are highlighted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
