Abstract
- Oral and oropharyngeal cancer is an aggressive cancer which is prone to local invasion and dissemination. Advanced oral and oropharyngeal cancer often requires multiple and multidisciplinary therapy, and recurrent or metastatic oral and oropharyngeal cancer is more difficult to achieve satisfying prognosis. In terms of effective therapy for patients with advanced and recurrent oral and oropharyngeal cancer, there are many consensuses as well as controversies worldwide. Meanwhile, invalid and non-standard diagnosis and treatment are also common, and there are no international guidelines for the salvage surgery yet. Here, we reviewed the definition, indications, surgical recommendations, perioperative management, auxiliary radiotherapy and chemotherapy and follow-up functional evaluation of salvage surgery for advanced or recurrent oral and oropharyngeal cancer, in the hope of improving the diagnosis and therapy as well as providing a reference for oral and maxillofacial surgeons.
