Abstract

The study proposes a reading of the book Tipos de Bogotá (1886) by Francisco de P. Carrasquilla. The text features twelve ‘daily chronicles’, and in every one of these the writer captures an existential routine typical for Bogotá. The study focuses on two such ‘chronicles’: “El recluta” and “El recién llegado de Europa”. The shared themes are the urban landscape, the presence of a flâneur’s mask, and the modern literary character. The study seeks to reflect on urban power as a modus vivendi and as an imaginary that shapes modernity at the end of the nineteenth century. In both ‘chronicles’, the author leverages literary tools to deploy social and political criticism. Such criticism, as framed by Carrasquilla, aids us to contemplate the importance of not silencing a culture deemed less important or peripheral compared to others, subjugated by a ‘modern’ perspective that privileges the ‘center’ while disregarding the ‘periphery’.
