Abstract

Bailey's theatre project is apparently designed to rescue the African from 'the depths of humanity's swampy psyche, an ancient god of pre-reason' (Bailey [1], p. 159). In the introduction, the editors pronounce their focus on 'indigenous South African Drama that is predominately written in the English' to the exclusion of 10 other official languages which theatre practitioners write and perform in. The Methuen drama guide to contemporary South African theatre: edited by M. Middeke, P. P. Schnierer and G. Homann, London, Bloomsbury, 2015, 1-384 pp. The first chapter, "The Pioneers" by Sarah Roberts provides a historical overview of what she terms "mainstream theatre" (2015, p. 17) in the period from 1976 to 1994.
