Mechanisms and therapeutic targets in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus is multifactorial and complex, and it is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. This metabolic disorder results from insulin resistance in target tissues and impairment of pancreatic insulin secretion. The purpose of this review is to examine our current understanding of the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes, identify therapeutic targets, and highlight recent advances in addressing this complex disorder.
