Abstract

This chapter profiles Italian American football coach Vincent Thomas Lombardi, who was born in 1913 and died in Washington in 1970. Lombardi is first-generation U.S. citizen of Italian descent, whose teams have won several National and two World Championships. He had repeatedly led mediocre and even losing teams to one victory after another. Vince has been elected to the Football Hall of Fame. The name Vincent, incidentally, derives from the Latin vincens, which means winning, a participial form of vincere which means to win.
